You say, "Eventually regular folk feel the squeeze". Regular folk feel the squeeze immediately. It's a sales tax with another name. We'll be paying the tariffs, not foreign countries.
Sadly, I think it's a smokescreen to cover up for tax cuts that will add TRILLIONS to our out-of-control deficit. 45% tariff on Lesotho??
Fair point. “Eventually” might have been too generous. For a lot of folks, the squeeze is immediate. Tariffs hit the consumer first. It’s just called “foreign policy” instead of “sales tax.”
That said, I don’t think all tariffs are smokescreens—but I do think they’re often oversold as silver bullets. A 45% tariff on Lesotho raises eyebrows, and not in the “this is a bold move” way. The impact might be domestic, but the logic sometimes feels imported.
Appreciate the pushback. It’s the kind of debate we ought to be having more often.
I've recently changed my voter registration from Democratic to NAV. Maybe I found myself agreeing with you too much. I was at a candidate forum last Friday in Hebo and had a cordial conversation with Mike Sears. We're both fans.
I just finished the book, "Abundance". Ezra Klein and co-author make a big point that the government in blue states is too "procedural", largely because it's dominated by lawyers. Maybe your fresh viewpoint comes from being a dentist.
I’m okay with the tariffs being implemented on other countries. If you look at the tariffs that other countries have imposed on the USA it is the only fair way to get the other countries to be reasonable. It might cost a little more to start but in the end it will work in our benefit. As of last week almost 80 countries have come to the table to negotiate and that has been positive.
As for China we need to double down on them to either come away with better trade or rid ourselves from cheap imports that we think we need and the US could actually produce. Business in China is not privately owned. We are dealing with the CCP.
After all, we could do a comparison in Oregon using the liberals who want to tax and fee you to death, along with controlling everything in your daily lives… and for what? Nothing in return
I don’t disagree with the frustration behind what you’re saying—especially when it comes to China. We’re not exactly dealing with a free market there, and pretending otherwise has cost us dearly over the last few decades. When a country subsidizes its industries and manipulates trade, a slap on the wrist doesn’t cut it.
That said, my concern isn’t with using tariffs—it’s with how and when we use them. If we’re strategic and targeted, great. But when they get rolled out like blunt instruments, it’s small producers here at home who get steamrolled first. Oregon growers, manufacturers, and shippers are feeling that right now.
I’m all for standing up to China. I just want to make sure we don’t punch ourselves in the gut while aiming for their jaw.
Another sad day for America as a school shooting unfolds in Texas. The gun proliferation lobby will be out in force, praying for God to strike down the evil amongst us. Yes, we are powerless to get the guns off of our streets and out of the schools. Which right is stronger , the right to live and walk without fear in our land, or the right to buy AR 15 , load up with all the ammunition Walmart will sell you. Time for our elected officials to do the right thing. But hey, we have a convicted sex offender in the White House, guess our elected officials didn't see it proper to impeach and convict. Now we all can suffer this nightmare, although for some reason I think America will come together after the Trump cult is long gone.
It won't be easy at first. But at this point I'm sticking with my vote. Trump campaigned on tariffs and that's exactly what I expect him to do. It's amazing how people don't truly understand how tariffs work. I'm happy to suffer a short while to support a future of wealth & prosperity to the American people. Welcome to the New Republic. No more waste, fraud and theft of our money. American prosperity is returning now that the Deep State has lost it's power. Not a conspiracy. Just a fact!!! The prices at the grocery stores and COSTCO are going down. And so has fuel prices by $0.90 cents. I'm already saving money by not worrying. Enjoy the ride...choo-chooo, lol!!!

Everything Trump has done so far has been strategic. He's a quantum genius;) The Art of the Deal is worth the read.
